Reid Hoffman:
“I helped to repair his reputation”

Two things are true here and the page holds both.

He named the mechanism better than anyone. Most people in this archive claim they were deceived, or that the science was worth it, or that they barely knew him. Hoffman said plainly that his presence at fundraising events repaired a sex offender’s reputation and delayed justice for his victims. That is exactly what this site documents everyone else doing.

And his account of the facts was wrong twice. He told Axios in 2019 that his last interaction was the 2015 dinner. He repeated it in 2023. Unsealed emails showed Epstein writing to him in 2017 — and his own calendar, once he searched it, showed meetings in April, June and July 2016 and a Skype call in March 2018.

How he handled the correction matters. He did not issue a lawyered non-denial. He posted the dates, named who arranged each one, said he would keep searching, and called for the files to be released. That is more than almost anyone else named in this archive has done.

The defence he offers is the weakest part. He says he participated because Ito told him Epstein had “successfully cleared MIT’s vetting process.” Epstein was listed as “disqualified” in MIT’s donor database, and staff in Ito’s office called him “Voldemort.”

And one email undercuts the naivety. Recommending Epstein to Thiel, Hoffman wrote he was “mostly fun, very interesting guy, you may find him perverse, but very smart on biology, computation, macro econ.” “Perverse” is his own word — offered in 2015 as a quirk to be tolerated, not a reason to decline.

Hoffman gave Epstein no money, no office and no institutional appointment. He gave him the table.

2 August 2015, Baume, Palo Alto. Hoffman hosts. Around the table: Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Priscilla Chan, Peter Thiel, Joi Ito — and a registered sex offender seven years past his conviction. Epstein called it “wild” in an email that was later unsealed.

That single evening is the clearest illustration in the archive of what Epstein was actually buying. Not capability — four of the ten research programmes he funded had no possible connection to anything he wanted. He was buying rooms, and Hoffman opened one of the most valuable in the world.

He was also used as a switchboard. Epstein requested Thiel’s phone number through Hoffman’s office. Thiel’s own relationship with Epstein ran from 2014 to 2019.

And the recommendation email is the mechanism in miniature. One trusted person vouching to another — fun, interesting, smart on biology; you may find him perverse. That is the introduction nobody regulates, which this archive documents on four continents.

What separates him from Ito and Nowak. Hoffman took no money from Epstein, gave him no credential, and held no institutional role that Epstein exploited. He was a guest and a host, not a gatekeeper.

What does not separate him. He stayed on the Media Lab advisory board until December 2021 — more than two years after Ito resigned over the same facts.

This archive is full of statements from people who took Epstein’s money or gave him access. Almost all of them are evasive.

Church came closest with “nerd tunnel vision.” Krauss called the reporting libelous. Brockman has never said anything at all. Negroponte said he would take the money again.

Hoffman’s 2019 statement is different in kind:

“By agreeing to participate in any fundraising activity where Epstein was present, I helped to repair his reputation and perpetuate injustice.”

He is not describing a lapse of vetting. He is describing a transfer of legitimacy — the exact mechanism this entire site exists to document — and accepting that he performed it. He told the Wall Street Journal it “gnaws” at him that his association helped Epstein’s reputation and “thus delayed justice for his survivors.”

The criticism, fairly stated. Critics argue he has consistently soft-played his own role — attributing his participation to Ito’s assurance, declining to resign from the advisory board when Ito resigned, and giving a last-contact date that was wrong by three years and only corrected once documents forced it.

Both readings survive the evidence. An accurate confession of the mechanism, paired with a persistently generous account of his own part in it.

What is not in dispute: he has never been accused of any offence, took nothing from Epstein, and is the only figure in this archive to have voluntarily published a corrected list of his own meetings.
