Peter Thiel has not been accused of any wrongdoing, and nothing in the released files suggests he knew of Epstein’s crimes. There is no evidence he ever visited the island — the documents show invitations, not travel. His spokesman denies Epstein co-owned any Thiel fund, while confirming he was a limited partner. Thiel did not respond to requests for comment from multiple outlets.
The direction of the relationship is what distinguishes this file.
Harvard took his money. Brockman took his dinners. Nowak gave him an office. In every case Epstein was the one pushing, and the institution was the one that failed to say no.
Here the pull runs both ways, and sometimes the other way entirely. The Dialog 2014 retreat he co-founded reached Epstein through others. His fund’s principals travelled to Epstein’s townhouse at Thiel’s behest to pitch him on Stash. In June 2017 Valar sent him opportunities marked “super confidential.”
All of that is nine years after the guilty plea.
What Epstein wanted in return is documented too. As early as February 2013 — before they had met — he was telling Barak that Thiel could put him on Palantir’s board, positioning himself as a broker for a company he had no connection to. By 2016 Barak was meeting Valar partners about Reporty, which became Carbyne.
The limited partnership is the hard fact. Barak described the fund as “owned by Peter Thiel and JE.” Thiel’s spokesman denies co-ownership — and confirms the limited partnership. Both things can be true, and the denial concedes the more important half.
What this is not. There is no evidence Thiel visited the island, participated in anything criminal, or knew what Epstein was doing. Investors take money from unpleasant people, and a limited partner is a passive role.
What it is. A sustained, two-directional business relationship with a registered sex offender, maintained by one of the most powerful investors in the world for five years — and never publicly explained.
Thiel → Epstein: Valar principals sent to his townhouse to pitch Stash.
Thiel’s fund → Epstein: deals marked “super confidential,” June 2017.
Epstein → Thiel: repeated island invitations, never documented as accepted.
The partnership ran 2014–2019 — to the week of the arrest.
Section 01
The Record
In a recorded conversation with Ehud Barak, Epstein floats Palantir as a route to a board seat for him: “Peter Thiel is one of the best, I’ve never met him, he’s going to come here next week. So I wanted to talk to him, and talk to you.” Epstein is positioning himself as a broker for a company he has no connection to, and a man he has not met.
Epstein and Thiel exchange scores of emails. Over the following years they appear to have met for meals at least eight times through 2017. Epstein offers introductions to Noam Chomsky, Woody Allen, Terje Rød-Larsen, Barak and former Russian deputy economy minister Sergey Belyakov.
Epstein emails Thiel: “would you like to visit the island?” He invites him on multiple occasions and writes, “Im always free to do as i please.” Nothing in the released documents confirms that Thiel ever accepted or travelled there. The record shows invitations, not visits.
Thiel, Barak and Epstein dine at Epstein’s Manhattan apartment. Topics include Israeli security; Epstein’s note references an “Assinaton squad.” Thiel’s reply, released by the DOJ: “Agreed — very Israeli and very stimulating. Thanks for including me!” What that referred to has never been clarified.
Valar Ventures principals McCormack and Fitzgerald meet Epstein at his New York townhouse — at Thiel’s behest. They pitch him on Stash, a micro-investing app that now holds around $3 billion under management.
The Dialog 2014 retreat at Sundance — the invitation-only society Thiel co-founded with Auren Hoffman — reaches Epstein. The invitation was signed by Thiel and Hoffman as organisers and forwarded to Epstein by others, including physicist Lisa Randall and investor Ian Osborne. The Guardian reports Auren Hoffman invited him. It is unclear whether Epstein ever attended.
Thiel attends a gathering at Epstein’s Manhattan residence alongside Bill Gates and Mort Zuckerman.
A private dinner at Baume in Palo Alto hosted by Reid Hoffman, with Epstein, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Priscilla Chan and Joi Ito also present.
Barak emails about meeting senior partners at “a new Investment Fund owned by Peter Thiel and JE” — presumed to be Valar Ventures — to discuss Reporty, the emergency-notification startup he backed that later became Carbyne. Thiel’s spokesman denies joint ownership but confirms Epstein was a limited partner.
Epstein’s accountant Richard Kahn relays that a hedge fund manager could obtain Palantir shares at what “seems like” a 50 percent discount. No Epstein holding in Palantir has ever been established.
Valar Ventures sends Epstein exclusive investment opportunities marked “super confidential.” Nine years after the conviction, a Thiel fund is treating him as a premium partner. Thiel and Barak meet again in Israel the same month.
Byline Times, reviewing more than 100 documents from the DOJ release, reports that Thiel personally solicited and maintained a business partnership with Epstein from 2014 through 2019 — up to his final arrest.
Thiel did not respond to requests for comment from multiple outlets. He has not been accused of any wrongdoing, and no document suggests he knew of the crimes.
Section 02
The Palantir Question
This is where the file connects to the surveillance thread, and it needs stating precisely because the temptation to overstate it is strong.
February 2013 — the pitch. Epstein, on tape, tells Barak that Thiel is “one of the best” and floats Palantir as a route to a board seat. He had not yet met Thiel.
June 2014 — the dinner. Thiel, Barak and Epstein together in Manhattan, discussing Israeli security. Thiel’s reply afterwards: “very Israeli and very stimulating.”
February 2016 — the fund. Barak meets senior partners at the fund he describes as owned by Thiel and Epstein, to discuss Reporty. Reporty became Carbyne — the emergency-call company Epstein put $1 million into.
December 2016 — the shares. Epstein’s accountant relays an offer of Palantir stock at a reported 50 percent discount.
June 2017 — Israel. Thiel and Barak meet again.
What this sequence does not establish. That Thiel gave Barak anything, that Epstein ever held Palantir shares, that Palantir did any business as a result, or that Thiel was aware of Epstein’s role in Carbyne. Barak never joined Palantir’s board.
What it does establish is that Epstein spent four years working the space between a former Israeli prime minister and the founder of an American surveillance company, and that both men kept meeting him. The surveillance hub documents where that thread goes next.
Section 03
The Valley Table
Thiel is the most documented of Epstein’s Silicon Valley contacts, but he was not alone at the table.
September 2014 — a gathering at Epstein’s Manhattan townhouse with Bill Gates and Mort Zuckerman.
August 2015 — a private dinner at Baume in Palo Alto, hosted by Reid Hoffman, with Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Priscilla Chan and Joi Ito present.
The pattern is the same one this archive documents everywhere else. Epstein did not need to be interesting. He needed one person in the room to have invited him — and after that his presence was self-justifying.
What he offered. Introductions to Chomsky, Woody Allen, Terje Rød-Larsen, Barak, and a former Russian deputy economy minister. In August 2014 he described William Burns to Thiel as the “best and most respected diplomat in the admin… conducted the secret iran negotiations.”
And the small detail that says the most. Epstein’s staff transmitted Thiel’s dietary requirements ahead of planned meetings. That is not a man being courted. That is a standing arrangement.
Forbes’ assessment is worth recording, because it cuts against the conspiratorial reading: for all the access, Epstein largely failed to capitalise on his Silicon Valley connections. He collected people. He did not, on the available evidence, convert them into much.
Documented: scores of emails, at least eight meals, the Dialog invitation, the Valar pitch, the “super confidential” deals, and the limited partnership — confirmed by Thiel’s own spokesman.
Not established: that Thiel visited the island, held any knowledge of the crimes, co-owned any fund with Epstein, or that Epstein ever held Palantir shares.
Unanswered: Thiel has never publicly explained the relationship and did not respond to requests for comment.
