Howard Lutnick:
four accounts

After meeting Epstein in 2005 he said he vowed never to be in a room with him again, and for twenty years described having spent “zero time” with him. The released files reference him 223 times. On 28 December 2012 both men signed to take stakes in an advertising company, their signatures on neighbouring pages. That same month he had lunch on Little St. James with his wife, four children and their nannies. Correspondence ran into at least 2014, he invited Epstein to a Clinton fundraiser in 2015, and in 2017 Epstein gave $50,000 to a dinner honouring him. He has never been accused of wrongdoing, and he testified voluntarily.

Howard Lutnick has never been accused of wrongdoing in connection with Epstein, by any authority. He appears in no flight log, no survivor has named him, and he testified before House Oversight voluntarily — the highest-ranking cabinet member named in the files to do so. What this page documents is not a crime. It is an account that changed four times, each revision arriving after a document made the previous version untenable.

The Finding
He said he vowed never to be in a room with Epstein again. Seven years later he signed a contract whose pages sit next to Epstein’s signature.
On 28 December 2012, both men signed to acquire stakes in an advertising technology company called AdfinEpstein for Southern Trust Company, Lutnick for an entity called CVAFH I. Days earlier they had met in person. That month, Lutnick had lunch on the island with his wife, four children and their nannies. Correspondence continued into at least 2014, and money moved toward Lutnick as late as 2017.

The archive has other people whose accounts shifted. This one is different in kind, because the revisions are datable to the disclosures that forced them.

For twenty years the account was: met him in 2005 when he moved next door, found him repulsive, cut ties. It was the only version available, and the documents to test it were sealed.

Then the files arrived, and each release moved the line. “Zero time” became a scheduled drink. A scheduled drink became a signed contract. A signed contract became a family lunch on Little St. James. The current version — “two other times that I can recall” — is the fourth.

What makes the Adfin document the hard one is that it is not a memory. A person can genuinely forget a lunch. A signature on a share purchase alongside Epstein’s, entered days after an in-person meeting, is a deliberate commercial act with counsel and paperwork behind it.

And it did not end there. In January 2013 Epstein’s office forwarded him documents on casino legislation in the US Virgin Islands — the jurisdiction housing Epstein’s island and his tax-advantaged companies. Business correspondence touching Adfin and Cantor Fitzgerald’s venture capital arm ran into at least 2014.

The 2017 detail is the one worth sitting with. Epstein agreed to give $50,000 to a dinner honouring Lutnick — and privately asked an organiser, “Hope pr is ok.” Nine years after the conviction, Epstein was the one worried about how the association would look. There is no indication Lutnick was told of that concern.

What follows from all of this is narrow, and the page holds to it. Doing business with Epstein in 2012 was legal, and thousands of people maintained contact after 2008. Nothing here shows Lutnick knew anything about the crimes. What it shows is that he told the public something the documents did not support, repeatedly, while serving in the cabinet.

The Four Accounts

1. Met him once in 2005, vowed never to be in a room with him again.

2. “Zero time” spent with him — repeated through 2025.

3. One meeting found in the files, “in May, I think, for an hour, at 5 o’clock.”

4. “Over the next 14 years, I met him two other times that I can recall — two times” — plus a confirmed lunch on the island.

223 references in the released files.

What He Said, and What the Files Show

Five public statements against the released documents. The last entry is the current account, and it may be accurate — it is included because it is also the fourth.

“I vowed never to be in a room with that disgusting person ever again.”
On the 2005 meeting
What the files show

December 2012: lunch on Little St. James. Lutnick confirmed it to lawmakers in February 2026 — “My wife was with me, as were my four children and nannies.”

He was in more than a room. He was on the island, four years after the conviction.
“Zero time” with him.
Repeated publicly through 2025
What the files show

223 references to Lutnick across the released files. Drinks scheduled May 2011. An in-person meeting days before the December 2012 contract signing. Correspondence continuing into at least 2014.

“Zero” is not a characterisation that survives 223 references.
“Limited interactions… in the presence of his wife.”
Commerce Department, 2026
What the files show

A signed commercial contract. On 28 December 2012 both men signed to acquire stakes in Adfin, an advertising technology company — Epstein for Southern Trust Company, Lutnick for an entity called CVAFH I. Their signatures appear on neighbouring pages.

A jointly signed contract is not an interaction. It is a business relationship.

What the files show

2015: Lutnick invites Epstein to a Hillary Clinton fundraiser. 2017: Epstein donates $50,000 to a dinner honouring Lutnick — while privately asking an organiser, “Hope pr is ok.”

“I met him two other times that I can recall — two times.”

What the files show

This is the revised account, given under questioning after the documents emerged. It may well be accurate. It is also the fourth version.

Each account was true to the documents available when it was given.

Section 02

The Record

2005
The neighbour

Epstein moves in next door in New York. Lutnick, then chairman and chief executive of Cantor Fitzgerald, meets him. This is the meeting he has never disputed — and for two decades, the only one he acknowledged.

May 2011
Drinks

Epstein’s calendar records drinks with Lutnick at 5pm. Lutnick has said this is the meeting he found when he searched the files for his own name.

Dec 2012
The island

Lutnick has lunch with Epstein on Little St. James during a family vacation. Four years after the guilty plea. He confirmed it to House Oversight in February 2026, having not disclosed it before.

Dec 2012
“Nice seeing you”

Epstein’s assistant writes: “Good morning Howard. Jeffrey wished me to pass along the below to you… Nice seeing you.” Days later, the contract is signed.

28 Dec 2012
The contract

Both men sign to take stakes in Adfin, an advertising technology company, among nine shareholders. Epstein signs for Southern Trust Company; Lutnick for CVAFH I. Their signatures are on neighbouring pages.

Jan 2013
Casino legislation

Epstein’s assistant forwards Lutnick documents concerning casino legislation in the US Virgin Islandsthe territory where Epstein owned his island and ran his tax-advantaged companies.

to 2014
It continues

Business correspondence connected to Adfin and to Cantor Fitzgerald’s venture capital arm continues between Epstein, his associates and Cantor-linked entities.

2015
The fundraiser

Lutnick invites Epstein to a Hillary Clinton fundraiser.

2015
The park view

“Are you aware as to them building to block our park views. What should we do about it? Time is of the essence,” Lutnick writes. Epstein: “No i was not.” A decade after the stated cut-off, and the tone is that of neighbours with a shared problem.

2017
$50,000

Epstein agrees to donate $50,000 to a dinner honouring Lutnick. Privately, he asks an organiser: “Hope pr is ok.” Epstein was worried about how it would look. There is no indication Lutnick was told of the concern.

2025
The denials

Lutnick, now Commerce Secretary, tells the New York Post and a podcast that he cut ties in 2005 and spent “zero time” with Epstein.

30 Jan 2026
The files

The DOJ release contains 223 references to him. Senator Schiff and Representative Foushee call for his resignation. The White House says he remains “a very important member of President Trump’s Team.”

Feb–May 2026
He testifies

Lutnick appears voluntarily before House Oversight — the highest-ranking cabinet member named in the files to do so. He confirms the island visit and revises his account: “Over the next 14 years, I met him two other times that I can recall.” He is questioned by Democrats and by members of his own party.

Section 03

The Part That Involves Public Office

The pre-2019 relationship is one question. What happened once he held office is a different one, and only the second involves the public.

He is Secretary of Commerce. The denials were issued while serving, to the press and then to Congress — and the department’s statements described the relationship in terms the files do not support.

And there is a second thread this archive has already documented. Representative Ashley Hinson, who worked to delay release of the files, received nearly $90,000 across her campaigns and PACs from billionaires named in them — Stephen Schwarzman, Apollo’s Marc Rowan, and Howard Lutnick.

Nothing establishes that any donation was made to influence the disclosure vote, and large donors give to many legislators for many reasons. But a man referenced 223 times in the files contributed to a legislator working to delay their publication, and both facts are on the public record.

The institutional response has been to hold. The White House said he “remains a very important member of President Trump’s Team.” Senator Schiff and Representative Foushee called for his resignation. He was questioned by Democrats and by members of his own party, and did not resign.

He did do one thing others in this archive have not. He testified voluntarily, on the record, and answered questions that produced a more accurate account than the one he had been giving. Bill and Hillary Clinton declined to testify. That distinction belongs on the page.

And the pattern is the archive’s recurring one. None of it was disclosed — not the contract, not the island visit, not the donation — and none of it emerged through any process of accountability. It emerged because a law forced three million pages into public view.

Held to the record
No authority has accused him of wrongdoing, and no survivor has named him.
He is in no flight log. The island visit was by his own later account a family lunch.
Doing business with Epstein in 2012 was lawful, and many people maintained contact after 2008.
He testified voluntarily — the highest-ranking cabinet official named in the files to do so.
The Commerce Department maintains the interactions were limited, occurred in his wife's presence, and that he has never been accused of wrongdoing.
What is documented is a signed contract, an island visit, correspondence to 2014, and four different public accounts.
